Individual Counselling Vancouver

What Is Individual Counselling?

Individual counselling provides a safe, nonjudgmental, and confidential space where you can closely examine your thoughts, emotions, behaviour, values, goals, and more with the support of a skilled practitioner. While it can help you navigate a particularly challenging time in your life, individual counselling isn’t just for those in crisis. It can also be a powerful tool for anyone who wants to build more rewarding relationships with themselves and others, invest in their overall health and wellbeing, and lead as fulfilling a life as possible.

My Approach

Because every client is unique, I tailor my counselling approach to each of their specific needs, incorporating elements from several evidence-based therapies:

Helps clients identify unhelpful thought patterns and replace them with healthier, more balanced ways of thinking that support positive emotion and effective coping.

Promotes psychological flexibility by encouraging clients to accept rather than resist negative aspects of their experience, clarify their personal values, and commit to actions that align with those values.

Provides clients with a supportive environment where they can examine patterns of negative emotion, promoting development of secure attachment (i.e., close, positive connections with themselves and others) and, in turn, new strategies for emotional regulation, healing, and personal growth.

Assists clients in examining the stories they create as they make
sense of their experiences to foster hope, a sense of
separation from problems, and the identification of
values, strengths, and more empowering narratives.

Highlights relaxation and awareness of the present moment as ways to reduce the distress associated with challenging thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, enhancing clients’ motivation, mood, and overall well-being.

What to Expect in Session

1. Getting Started

From the beginning, my priority is to create a therapeutic environment where you feel safe, respected, and in control. During early sessions, we’ll examine your background, life experiences, and values. We’ll also clarify your goals for therapy and how we’ll work towards them, ensuring that the path forward addresses your wants and needs.

2. Integrating Insights & Trying New Approaches

As therapy progresses, we’ll focus on developing new understandings, skills, and practices, as well as how you can benefit by incorporating these into your life. While this stage of therapy looks different for everyone, it often involves examining patterns of challenging thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, as well as trying out new perspectives and responses that serve you better.

3. Consolidating Growth & Moving Forward

Towards the end of our work together, we’ll focus on clarifying, solidifying, and celebrating the gains you’ve made, taking time to ensure that you feel confident and resilient as you carry the insights and skills you’ve developed beyond the therapy room.
